I updated the software on my iphone but when it had finished, it started to restore. Will this delete everything and is it supposed to restore?

Restoring your iPhone erases everything, and I don't think it's supposed to restore. The computer usually asks you to backup your iPhone before updating.

Yes, it deletes everything, but itunes always asks you to backup your iphone, if you back up your iphone you have the option of restoring the iphone from a backup. but in ios4 updates it updates it without deleting anything
