Adjusting the brightness on a non-Mac monitor connected to a Macbook?

*Please keep this Mac related, no sarcasm or criticism of Macs in general. Thanks.*

I recently decided to connect an LCD (non Apple) monitor to my Macbook Pro using a DVI cable. When I open up my Display settings under System Preferences, however, the brightness adjustment bar that everyone says should be there is not there. Only the refresh settings, resolution options, and color display options. I know the screen I am using could be brighter but I'm not sure how to adjust it.

What do I do?

I feel really bad pointing this out. The display has a menu button on it. You have to physically use the buttons on the monitor to change the brightness.
